Brackley Town have announced the signing of centre-back Will Armitage from Southampton on a permanent deal. The 21-year-old had a brief loan spell at Brackley at the start of last season and is set to return to the club at the end of his Southampton contract. Armitage began his career with Cheltenham Town, becoming the club's youngest-ever first-team player at the time of his debut before continuing his development at Southampton. Despite never making a senior appearance with Southampton, Armitage played 36 times for their under-21 side and featured 21 times at under-18 level. Armitage has already gained valuable experience in the National League and National League South having turned out for the likes of Aldershot Town and Eastbourne Borough. Upon joining, Armitage said: 'I had experience of what Brackley is about from last year and I know the club has a lot of ambition and wants to be as high as it can. I think it's a great place for me to take the next step in my career.' Andy Whing, excited to confirm his second signing as manager, added: 'Will is a fantastic prospect and we're delighted he's joined us permanently. He's had various loan moves including one here where he has gained valuable experience at this level and above. He's got fantastic attributes that will suit us going forward, very composed on the ball and loves defending. I'm sure Will can go on in his career and we're very happy that he's joined us to be able to do that. Welcome, Will.' Brackley's second new addition after midfielder Charlie Cooper, Armitage could prove to be an important acquisition. Still very early on in his career, the centre-half has room to improve and he will likely be a regular starter in Whing's new-look back three. In defence, Armitage will line up alongside Kyle Morrison, who is one of just two senior players from last season to be retained so far. Versatile forward Matt Lowe is the other.
